Obituary for Carol Jean Vander Wall

Carol Jean VanderWall, age 78, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away unexpectedly Monday, January 18, 2016 in Lake Placid, FL. She was born November 15, 1937 in Grand Haven, MI to Orrie and Swannie (Katt-Ruhlig) VanderMeiden. On June 5, 1957 she married her husband of 58 years, James “Jim” VanderWall in Grand Haven. They lived many years in Norton Shores, MI before moving to Hart, MI in 2003 and spent their winters in Lake Placid, FL for the last 20 years.

Carol was a former member of Unity Reformed Church in Muskegon and had also attended Mears Community United Methodist Church in Mears, MI. Carol was the Vice President of United Sign Company for 20 years before retiring in 1997. She enjoyed baking, card making, sewing, line dancing, playing cards, and gardening, but more than anything, enjoyed being with family.

She will loving be remember by her husband, Jim; daughter, Janna Kooi of Grand Rapids; son, Mark VanderWall of Norton Shores; 6 grandchildren: Ryan, Molly, and Emily Kooi, Zoe Stenholm, Mila and Orrie VanderWall; great-grandson, Landon Ross; 3 brothers: Orrie “John” (Margaret) Vander Meiden, Rev. James (Bonnie) Vander Meiden, David (Joann) Vander Meiden; sister, Dorothy (Tony) Meyers; 2 step-brothers and 2 step-sisters; 2 sisters-in-law: Emilee Payne, Lois (Vercil) Potts; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces; and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and step-father, Rev. Edward Ruhlig.

FUNERAL SERVICES for Carol will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at the Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444, with the Rev. Ken Vanderlaan officiating. VISITATION with the family will be from 6-8 PM Monday, January 25, 2016 and one hour prior to the service Tuesday morning. Burial will take place in Lake Forest Cemetery, Grand Haven,MI. MEMORIALS to Samaritan’s Carriage or Gideons International will be appreciated.
