Obituary for James O. ""Jimmie"" Newell

James O. Newell, “Jimmie” 82, of Lake Placid went to be with his Lord on Saturday morning March 4, 2017 at the Lake Placid Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. Newell was the son of Margaret and Oliver Newell who was born on November 15, 1934 in New York City, NY. Mr. Newell served his country with honors in the US Army. James was a career firefighter with the New York City Fire Department, who had a passion for the construction industry. He spent many years as Vice President of Construction for Ronto Developments of Naples, FL, supervising construction of homes and high rises. Jimmie has been a resident of Lake Placid for the past 20 years moving here from Marco Island, FL. James was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Anglican Episcopal Church in Lake Placid, and the Elks Lodge. He would most want to be remembered for his 44 years of sobriety and countless people who were reminded “don’t drink and go to meetings”. James enjoyed rescuing little dogs, and leaves behind Brewster, Teddy, Remy, Paco and Pepe and loved to spend time with his family and friends. He will be remembered also for his wonderful sense of humor, although often slightly off color. James is survived by his loving wife of 32 years Nancy; daughter, Christine; sons, Randy, James and Thomas; 5 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild, a brother Edward Newell and a nephew Allie both of Rockledge, FL. A service to celebrate James’ life will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the St. Francis of Assisi Anglican Episcopal Church 43 Lake June Road, Lake Placid with Rev. Elizabeth Nelson officiating. He is now a newcomer at the big meeting in the sky where he can share with all his friends who got there first. He was a unique man who will be missed by everyone who knew him. Inurnment will follow in the St. Francis Gardens. Donations in Jimmie’s name may be made to the Humane Society of Highlands County.
