Obituary for Mary P. MacCarthy

Mary P. MacCarthy, 90, of Lake Placid went home to be with her Lord on Sunday morning, October 15, 2017. Mary was born in Angier, North Carolina on February 17, 1927 to parents, Pearl (Flowers) and Herman Parker. After graduating from high school in Smithfield, NC she worked as a telephone operator. She then moved to Key West, Florida and lived there many years working for Southern Bell Telephone Company. She later moved to Franklin, NC where she resided until 2001. In Franklin, she was active in the First Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and participated in many church activities. She loved tending to her vegetable and flower gardens in the mountains. She also loved to do crafts of all kinds and created many beautiful things. She was also an avid football fan following the Miami Dolphins and University of Florida Gators. In 2002 she relocated to the Covered Bridge community in Lake Placid where she resided until 2015. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Placid. With her health declining due to Parkinson’s Disease, in 2016 she moved to the Southern Lifestyle Assisted Living facility.

She is preceded in death by husband, Howard MacCarthy and son, Jim MacCarthy, and five of her siblings. She is survived by her loving daughters, Beverly MacCarthy and Cynthia Richards; son-in-law, Ken Richards; step-son, Steven MacCarthy; 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Reba Jean Avant of Columbia, SC and brother, Herman Parker of Charlotte, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary was a very caring and loving person who will be missed by all who knew her.
In keeping with Mary’s wishes, there will be a private service to celebrate her life in Franklin, NC at a later date.
