Obituary for Raymond "Captian" Meyers

Raymond "Captian" Meyers
Captain Raymond A. Meyers, 75 of Lake Placid, FL took his final flight to Heaven on the afternoon of Thursday, January 25, 2018. He passed peacefully in his home with his loving wife and daughter by his side. He was under the graceful care of VITAS hospice. A native of Miami, Raymond was born on June 11, 1942 and was the son of Jessie June Chartier and Raymond Hugh Meyers. Captain Meyers served his country with honors in the US Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller, Active Duty 1961-1964, followed by two years in the Air Force Reserves. His passion for flying lead him to a career as a pilot with Trans World Airlines (TWA) from 1965-1996, promoting to Captain in 1980, which was one of the proudest moments of his life. Raymond was the first graduate of the Career Pilot Training Program at Miami-Dade Junior College in December 1965 and was an instructor of meteorology and aviation sciences at the school at the same time. He graduated one day, and went to work the next day with TWA in Kansas City, MO. His love of flying for work and leisure, lead him to establish the Smithville Dam Busters R/C club in Smithville, MO in 1980, serving as a former President of the Club. During his commercial airline career, while living in MO, he owned & operated Meyers Electric & Construction in Gladstone. He used the skills he learned while working for his father, who owned & operated Best Electric in Miami. Additionally, he served as a volunteer Deputy Sheriff for Clay County Sheriff’s Department and an instructor of meteorology at Maple Woods Community College in Kansas City. He moved to Lake Placid in 1985 where he became active in the local community, volunteering with the Leisure Lakes Volunteer Fire Department as a firefighter for Stations 29 & 30 and as a pilot for the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office. He also served with the local #314 Civil Air Patrol squadron, attaining the level of Lt. Col. His duties included: Mission Pilot, Check Pilot, Cadet Orientation Pilot and Instructor for various subjects. His pilot ratings included Airline Transport Pilot III, Airplane Multiengine Land, B-727, Commercial Privileges, Airplane Single Engine Land & Sea, Flight Instructor and Ground Instructor. He accrued over 26,000 Hours of accident-free flight time. He was a member of the AOPA and maintained his instrument proficiencies through private aircraft ownership and various other aircraft in general aviation, post retirement. He is survived by his Wife of 23 years Stacey, Daughter Jennifer Joette Giardina (Brian), Granddaughter Marlee, sister Judy Edwards (Jerome) in NC and their family and Cousin Peter Meyers in Melbourne, FL. In keeping with his wishes, the “Captain” requested a direct cremation with no services but asked that his friends take someone special out dinner in his memory. He had a special appreciation in his heart for the Wounded Warrior Project ( www.woundedwarriorproject.org ) and VITAS HEALTHCARE ( www.VITAS.com ).
